Position Summary:
The Musculoskeletal Diseases/Injuries/Restorative and Rehabilitative Medicine Task Area Lead is the principal contractor SME responsible for overseeing all activities related to award management, scientific and technical review, and compliance for portfolios comprising physical rehabilitation, orthopedics, musculoskeletal research, and related injury prevention and recovery. This critical role drives excellence in documentation, performance, and compliance to support the CDMRP’s advancement of warfighter health and recovery. 

Organizational Reporting:
Reports directly to the Contractor Program Manager; functions in close partnership with CDMRP Science Officers/Government technical staff; may mentor/supervise junior technical/scientific personnel. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Provide direct SME leadership for grants and contracts related to musculoskeletal disease, injury repair, rehabilitation, and physical medicine. 

• Manage all aspects of the research award lifecycle, from application review to final report and closeout, ensuring timeliness and quality. 

• Conduct high-level scientific and administrative review of reports, spot compliance issues, and initiate corrective actions in conjunction with Government SOs. 

• Ensure proper data management, documentation, and regulatory adherence across all projects using EGS/eBRAP and associated systems. 

• Synthesize technical findings for leadership, prepare portfolio summaries, and participate in audits, reviews, and working groups. 

• Maintain current knowledge of emerging approaches in rehabilitative medicine, orthopedic device research, and injury recovery for both military and civilian populations. 

• Ensure completion of all mandated contract, federal, and agency training and compliance programs. 

 

Required Education & Experience: 

• Doctorate (PhD, MD, DPT, or equivalent) in musculoskeletal medicine, orthopedic surgery, biomedical engineering, physical medicine/rehabilitation, or closely affiliated discipline;
  OR a master’s degree with substantial, progressive, relevant experience. 

• At least 5 years of substantive experience in musculoskeletal and/or rehabilitation research; 3+ years in federal research/program administration in the field. 

• Proven record managing large, multi-site research portfolios or programs involving musculoskeletal or rehabilitation-related research. 

 

Required Skills & Expertise: 

• Completion of CDMRP SOTP within 8 weeks (>90% passing). 

• Astute understanding of physical/rehabilitative medicine research, study design, and device/regulatory affairs. 

• Proficiency in technical writing, data management, and portfolio reporting. 

• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement; experience liaising directly with government/academic/clinical PIs. 

• Capable of overseeing and guiding subordinate analysts or junior scientists.

• Flexibility for hybrid/remote and on-site working arrangements. 

• Annual certification of no organizational conflicts and execution of required confidentiality agreements. 

• Must maintain all required government training, security, and privacy certifications throughout assignment. 

• Capable of responding to dynamic government research priorities in musculoskeletal and rehabilitative medicine. 

Must be U.S. citizen and be able to obtain a NACI (TI)-Public Trust Clearance. Must be able to pass background and drug testing. THIS IS A FEDERAL DEFENSE HEALTH AGENCY CONTRACT
