JOB DESCRIPTION:
Allied Technologies and Consulting (ATC) is recruiting for a Medical Prototype Development Laboratory (MPDL) Prototype Fabrication Specialist with specific skills in Welding and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining. The position is based in Frederick, MD and requires 5 days per week on-site at the fabrication lab on Fort Detrick.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Medical Prototype Development Laboratory (MPDL) Prototype Fabrication Support will perform the following duties:
- Provide mechanical design and fabrication skills, including welding (Arc, MIG, TIG), CNC machining, machining (non-CNC) and the use of other shop fabrication equipment in order to enable the manufacture of medical prototype materiel and/or associated test equipment and fixtures as needed to enable medical product development.
- Provide engineering skills to design, develop, and fabricate/manufacture medical materiel prototypes and laboratory test apparatus supporting medical product research, development, and acquisition programs.
- Supply technical skills to design, model and create detail/assembly drawings of mechanical components and assemblies utilizing Autodesk’s Inventor three-dimensional (3D) computer aided design (CAD) software.
- Produce and maintain accurate electronic 3D models, sub-assemblies, assemblies, drawings and parts lists for each project.
- Have the ability to perform 3D scanning and measurement to provide real-time rendering, surface optimization and full model editing.
- Provide the technical skills necessary to fabricate prototype materiel / components and assemblies utilizing fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing process.
- Develop and/or maintain project technical design packages: design documentation, correspondence, applicable drawing annotations, specifications, standards and commercial part numbers.
- Maintain all project files in an accurate, retrievable and systematic method.
- Apply appropriate engineering principles, material properties and fabrication techniques to all projects.
- Work independently in a concurrent engineering/fabrication environment.
- Confer with engineers and/or requester to design and prototype field medical materiel and laboratory apparatus.
- Provide skills necessary to decipher wide array of work requests including a verbal description of a problem, objective, design intent, parameters, sketches and/or detailed drawings.
- Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations as required.
- Obtain and use appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
- Follow applicable safety policy in the event of an accident.
- Be technically competent in design, fabrication with a thorough comprehensive knowledge of the design/fabrication process: communication, white boarding, engineering, CAD and prototyping.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree desired in related field, such as Biomedical Engineering, and/or Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or equivalent years of experience.
- At least 5+ years as a Welder and/or CNC Machinist.
- Understanding of medical device development, design, prototyping and testing of devices.
- Must possess strong communications skills including verbal, written and interpersonal.
- Must possess strong attention to detail, organizational and efficient time-management skills.
- Must be proficient with MS suites including Excel, Word, SharePoint.
- US Citizen
- Must be able to pass background and drug testing
